In UT it seemed like nobody used the canvas bags. Here in New Hampshire (we moved here 8 months ago) you are the odd one out if you don't bring your own bags. So we jumped on the band-wagon! One store even gives you 5 cents off per bag you use when you shop there...so they pay for themselves!
I got ours at WalMart for $1 a piece. And seriously they are awesome! My first trip to the store with them was great. One bag held 10 lbs of flour and lots of canned food items...It really is the way to go!
Martha Stewart has a pattern for a pillow case bag that can be used as a grocery bag, and can even be lined with plastic.
